Up to 141 days of gas main work is planned around Lodge Oak Lane, Tudeley Lane and Kings Road from 28 September, closing six Tonbridge streets.
Update, 25 September 2026: the order is now made. Kent County Council’s notice dated 25 September lists the Various Roads, Tonbridge order as made, not proposed. The streets, phases and diversions are unchanged, and it still runs on or after 28 September for up to 141 days. (Kent County Council notice dated 25 September 2026)
Parts of eight streets in south-east Tonbridge face closures or parking bans for up to 141 days from Monday 28 September. The work is a gas main replacement around Lodge Oak Lane, Tudeley Lane and Kings Road.
Kent County Council published the closures in a traffic notice dated 11 September. It says the council “intends to make” the order, so the dates are proposed and can still move. (Kent County Council notice, Public Notice Portal)
If the job takes the full 141 days, it would run into the middle of February 2027.
Which streets are affected
Six streets are to be closed, at least in part:
- Kings Road, in two phases: near the Goldsmid Road junction, and from the Lodge Oak Lane junction to number 51. Parking is banned too.
- Lodge Oak Lane, near its junction with Tudeley Lane. Parking is banned from Tudeley Lane to Vale Rise.
- Tudeley Lane, from Lodge Oak Lane out to Five Oak Road. Parking is banned from the A2014 Pembury Road to Five Oak Green Road, and from number 11 to Lodge Oak Lane.
- Dowgate Close, near Lodge Oak Lane. Parking is banned on both sides as far as number 75.
- Somerhill Road, near Lodge Oak Lane. Parking is banned for about 25 metres on both sides.
- Hectorage Road, near Lodge Oak Lane. Parking is banned as far as number 121.
Two more stay open but lose their parking on both sides:
- Goldsmid Road, from the A2014 Pembury Road to number 28.
- Gorham Drive, along its whole length.
The notice gives the far end of the Tudeley Lane closure as “Five Oak Road” in one line and “Five Oak Green Road” in the next. It does not say in what order the other streets will be dug.
The diversions
The signed routes lean on the A2014 Pembury Road and Goldsmid Road:
- Kings Road traffic goes via Lodge Oak Lane, Tudeley Lane, the A2014 Pembury Road and Goldsmid Road.
- Hectorage Road traffic goes via Lodge Oak Lane, Kings Road and Goldsmid Road.
- Somerhill Road traffic goes via Gorham Drive and Lodge Oak Lane.
Gorham Drive, which carries the Somerhill Road diversion, is also the street that loses all of its parking.
Tudeley Lane has no diversion at all. The notice says access will be kept “when safe to do so”. Lodge Oak Lane and Dowgate Close are only diverted around the rest of the same roads.
Who is doing the work
The notice describes “gas mains replacement works” and does not name who is carrying them out. SGN runs the gas mains in Tonbridge and lists its larger jobs on its major projects page. On 11 September the only Tonbridge scheme it listed was the Three Elm Lane main, which started on 22 July. There was no page yet for this one.
What it means for you
- If you park on the street on any of the eight roads above, expect restrictions from 28 September at the earliest. Watch for signs on site, because the notice does not give dates for each stretch.
- “On or after 28 September” is the earliest start, not a fixed one. A proposed order is confirmed when a later notice lists it as an “order made”. We read those notices every week.
- Before you set off, search the street on one.network, which shows live works on a map.
- Council car parks and their charges are on our parking in Tonbridge page.
Every other closure in the borough is on our Tonbridge roadworks and travel page, refreshed each week.
