Tonbridge's Rotary Christmas Festival is Sunday 29 November 2026, with the High Street closed, a street market, and the lights switched on at the Big Bridge before a firework finale.

The Tonbridge Rotary Christmas Festival is on Sunday 29 November 2026. The Rotary Club of Tonbridge has posted the date on the front of its own website as a save-the-date, and it matches the club’s stated rule: the festival runs every year on the last Sunday in November.

It is the day the town’s Christmas lights go on, and it is free.

What happens, and when

The Rotary Club’s own description of the festival gives the running window as 1.45pm to 6pm, with many stalls open earlier than that.

The council’s listing, which still carries last year’s entry, sets out the shape of the day in more detail:

  • The High Street closes to traffic and becomes a street market of local traders, food and drink.
  • A main stage carries local music, dance and drama acts.
  • A family fun fair runs in the Sovereign Way Mid car park.
  • Father Christmas rides down the High Street in his sleigh, then takes up residence in a grotto. He brings two reindeer.
  • The town gathers at the Big Bridge, near River Walk, at 5pm for the switch-on.
  • A low-noise firework finale over Tonbridge Castle closes the event.

Treat the 5pm switch-on time and the fun fair location as last year’s arrangement rather than a 2026 commitment. The council’s event page has not been rolled forward: as at 5 September 2026 it still reads “30th November 2025”, which was last year’s date.

The Hartley Morris Men perform in the street, and the Rotary Club names Razzamatazz and the Tonbridge Rock Choir among the regular stage acts. Entry is free, with donations welcome.

Who actually runs it

This one confuses people every year, because four organisations are involved.

The Rotary Club of Tonbridge owns the event and it is one of the club’s two big fundraisers, alongside the Tonbridge half marathon. The day itself is managed by Lollipop Events Ltd on the club’s behalf, with support from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, and Tonbridge Lions Club supplies most of the marshals.

Stall enquiries have gone to Lollipop Events in past years.

Parking, and the car park you lose

The High Street closure and the fun fair take out two of the obvious options at once, so this is the day to park further out and walk in.

If the fun fair goes back into Sovereign Way Mid, that is 112 spaces gone. Sovereign Way North (164 bays) and Sovereign Way East (67 bays) sit alongside it, and Lower Castle Field on The Slade has another 161.

Every chargeable council car park in Tonbridge charges 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, so a Sunday afternoon is not free. The tariff at both Sovereign Way and Lower Castle Field runs £1.60 for an hour, £3.00 for two, £4.10 for three and £6.20 for six. Ticket machines take coins only, from 10p up, and give no change; card payment is via RingGo.

Our Tonbridge parking guide has the full 32-car-park tariff table and the free ones, and the roadworks and travel page will carry the closure once it is advertised.

No temporary traffic order for the High Street closure had appeared on the Public Notice Portal as at 5 September 2026. Kent County Council normally advertises these a few weeks out.

Elsewhere in the borough

Snodland has a confirmed date and it is the day before Tonbridge’s. Snodland Town Council lists Christmas in Snodland and the Snodland Lantern Parade for Saturday 28 November 2026: stalls and Santa’s grotto in the Rocfort Road car park from 12 noon, the Snodland Festival of Lights parade leaving the Potyns car park at 4.30pm, and the lights switched on in the High Street at 5pm. Road closures are promised but not yet published.

West Malling has no 2026 date, and the sources that look like they have one do not. Heart of Kent Hospice, which the West Malling Christmas Festival raises money for, still advertises the event as “Sunday 17 November” on its own site. 17 November 2026 is a Tuesday. It was a Sunday in 2024, which is the year that page describes. The most recent festival that can be dated from a first-party source is Sunday 16 November 2025, from Malling Town Club’s notice about entry to the club on the day. And townmalling.co.uk, which still comes up in searches, has not been touched since 2008: it advertises a switch-on on Sunday 30 November of that year.

If West Malling holds to its pattern, expect a mid-November Sunday, announced in October.

Still to be confirmed for Tonbridge

  • The 2026 running times and whether the switch-on stays at 5pm.
  • The road closure order and its hours.
  • Whether the fun fair returns to Sovereign Way Mid.

We will update this page when the council refreshes its listing, which in recent years has happened during October.
